Biography: Chidera Okonkwo was raised in Lagos, Nigeria where he grew up surrounded by both economic challenges and a deep sense of community. He developed a passion for understanding how economic systems can create positive change in underserved areas. After moving to the United States on a sponsored opportunity, Chidera enrolled at UCLA, where he is pursuing a major in Economics and a minor in Environmental Engineering.
Driven by a belief in the power of market-based solutions for climate change and social equity, Chidera has combined rigorous coursework with practical experience in energy consulting and infrastructure finance. His work spans from in-lab research on alternative solar materials to real-world projects like developing electric vehicle transition strategies for West African economies. Outside the classroom, he has held leadership roles in student organizations, raised significant funding for educational initiatives, and mentored peers through national fellowship programs. Chidera hopes to use his UCLA education as a launchpad to create sustainable, inclusive growth around the world.
Future Plans: Chidera plans to continue leveraging his academic training in economics and environmental engineering to deepen his expertise in sustainable infrastructure and inclusive economic development. Over the next year, he hopes to delve deeper into the clean energy world by building on his previous experiences at McKinsey & Company, Ernst and Young (EY), and D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI).
After graduation, Chidera aims to work in the renewable energy investment sector, ideally with a firm that bridges financial markets and sustainable development in the Global South. His long-term career goal is to launch an investment platform that supports innovative energy projects in Africa—initiatives that are economically viable and environmentally sound. He sees this pathway as a way to bring the lessons he’s learned at UCLA back to communities like the one he grew up in, fostering inclusive growth through market-driven solutions.
