The UCLA Department of Economics is delighted to announce – the application period for the 2021-2022 Benjamin Graham Value Investing Program Concentration is now open!

Founded in 2018 by Professors Andrew Atkeson and William E. Simon, Jr., the Benjamin Graham Value Investing Program equips undergraduate economics students with an unparalleled education in finance and investing.

The Program consists of an academic concentration in Value Investing taught by real-world practitioners known as “Investors in Residence”.  This industry-based curriculum prepares students through applied research projects, financial modeling, and group projects in four core courses:

EC-167 History of Financial Crises

EC-168 Introduction to Value Investing

EC-169 Applied Value Investing

EC-187 Special Projects in Investing

Students participating in this concentration (a total of 40 are accepted) will be able to understand the full set of fundamental economic and strategic forces that favor or disfavor a particular investment opportunity from both a theoretical and practical perspective. To learn more about the concentration requirements, please click here.

In addition, the Benjamin Graham Value Investing Program offers a second component to the curriculum called the Simon Fellowship Program, which is a senior-level recruitment platform created to provide exceptional Value Investing Concentrators with avenues to explore careers at hedge funds, private equity firms, and other buy-side roles, through applied research projects and firm visits. Furthermore, the Benjamin Graham Value Investing Program has also partnered with the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program, giving Simon Fellows the opportunity to take the Level 1 Exam prior to graduation.

Dear Value Investing Students and Alumni,

With another academic year under our belts and a new one about to begin, I wanted to share with you our second annual Benjamin Graham Value Investing Program newsletter, enclosed here: 2020 Benjamin Graham Value Investing Newsletter.

This year’s newsletter traces our program’s development over the course of the past year and includes interviews with some of our program alumni as well as Investors in Residence. It also profiles our applicant pool as well as the stellar job placements of our graduates.  I hope you will be encouraged by what you read, as we could never have achieved such a high level of success without your hard work and commitment along the way.

I also want to say a special thanks to the members of our Simon Fellowship Newsletter Committee: Deborah Lim, Matthew Marquez Molnar, and Ray Fu. I could not be more grateful for all the hours they spent to produce such an informative and attractive newsletter.

I certainly hope everyone enjoys reading it, and look forward to staying in touch.

Go Bruins!

With best regards,
Professor Simon

In December 2018, Professor Bill Simon, co-founder of the Value Investing Program, had the honor to meet super-investor Warren Buffett at his office in Omaha, Nebraska. Here, Mr. Buffett is seen holding the 2018-19 UCLA Value Investing Program t-shirt before their dinner together. On the right is the letter Mr. Buffett wrote Professor Simon on receiving the news that the Value Investing Program had been named for Benjamin Graham, Mr. Buffett’s mentor. The Program could not be more pleased to have the encouragement of Benjamin Graham’s most extraordinary student.

The Benjamin Graham Value Investing Program is intended to prepare undergraduates for a wide range of careers in which they will be faced with the challenge of evaluating investment opportunities and making active decisions to direct capital to enhance value. Such careers include high level executive positions within companies, careers in alternative investment firms such as private equity or distressed debt firms, or in actively managed mutual funds. A student graduating from this program will be able to understand the full set of fundamental economic and strategic forces that favor or disfavor a particular investment opportunity from both a theoretical and historical perspective.

The Benjamin Graham Value Investing Program consists of 1) an academic concentration in Value Investing consisting taught by real-world practitioners known as “Investors in Residence” and 2) the Simon Fellowship, a recruitment platform created to provide exceptional undergraduates with avenues to explore careers at hedge funds, private equity firms, and other buy-side roles.
