Biography

Mathew Pham is a rising third-year student majoring in Mathematics/Economics with a Specialization in Computing and a Minor in Data Science Engineering. Born and raised in Orange County, UCLA was always his top choice, drawn in by the academics, sports culture, and, of course, the number one dining hall in the country. As a first-generation college student, he takes pride in the path he’s taken and is motivated by the opportunities that a UCLA education opens for him.

Outside of academics, Mathew loves staying active, where he frequently plays basketball and badminton, and has recently picked up poker as a new hobby. At UCLA, he is involved in Bruin Sports Analytics, where he is part of a team building a game-state win probability model for the NBA, allowing users to modify a certain event and see how that affects the probability of the home team winning. Mathew hopes to get involved in machine learning research, where he can further his technical skills and explore how various models can be applied to real-world problems.

Future Plans

Mathew is currently focused on building a strong foundation in economics and data, with plans to pursue and recruit for internships in the tech sector. He is drawn toward roles in data science and data engineering and hopes to gain industry experience that allows him to apply what he builds in his technical foundation.

After graduation, Mathew plans to enter the workforce, aiming to contribute to data-driven decision-making. However, he remains open to how his path may evolve, including furthering his education and pursuing a master’s in a similar field, such as Data Science or Financial Engineering. Ultimately, Mathew is committed to a career in making rigorous analysis that creates meaningful impact.

Scholarship Impact

The Robert D. and Margaret A. Wark Memorial Scholarship means more than just financial support. It also validates the path that I have chosen. As a first-generation college student, navigating higher education has been a challenge on its own. Angelina Chang is a third-year student majoring in Business Economics and minoring in Social Data Science. She started her journey in the United States three years ago, and moving here from another country brought its share of unique challenges, from adapting to a completely new culture to navigating a different educational system. Through these experiences and obstacles, she has grown immensely both academically and personally.

Future Plans

Angelina Chang plans to graduate with a Business Economics degree and a minor in Social Data Science in 2027. Inspired by her parents, she plans to keep pursuing a master’s degree in data science after graduation. Her passion for Economics will be an important foundation in helping her achieve her goal of working in the technology or healthcare field, where she hopes to apply economic insights and data-driven analysis to solve real-world problems.

Elizabeth Yang is a rising fourth-year at UCLA, double majoring in Business Economics and Cognitive Science. She has pursued opportunities to deepen her understanding of finance through both academics and professional experiences. Outside the classroom, Elizabeth is actively involved in investment research and campus leadership. She serves as the VP of Finance for the Impact Investing Group and is a member of the Benjamin Graham Value Investing Program, where she conducts fundamental research on mispriced companies and pitches investment ideas. Additionally, she has interned as an equity research associate at a private family office, where she specialized in company analysis and investment thesis formulation.

Future Plans

Elizabeth Yang plans to continue developing her experience in finance and investment research through future internships and leadership opportunities. In Summer 2026, she will intern at Insight Investment within the credit research team, where she hopes to strengthen her understanding of fixed income markets, credit analysis, and long-term portfolio management. After graduation, Elizabeth hopes to pursue a career in asset management, with a particular interest in value investing and fundamental equity research.

Receiving the Harold R. Mortenson Endowed Scholarship Fund is extremely meaningful to me. I feel recognized for the hard work I have put into pursuing my academic and career goals in business and economics, specifically in investment research. Future Plans

Cindy plans to continue exploring opportunities in finance and investing while building a deeper understanding of startups and emerging industries. In the coming year, she hopes to gain hands-on experience conducting market research, analyzing companies, and learning how new ideas develop into sustainable businesses. She is especially interested in technology and artificial intelligence and enjoys learning about the challenges and opportunities facing growing companies. She currently works as a Student Manager for UCLA Athletics and volunteers with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, providing IRS-certified tax preparation services to members of the Los Angeles community. Through her academic, leadership, and professional experiences, Lauren hopes to continue developing her technical and interpersonal skills as she pursues a career in finance.

Future Plans

Lauren plans to continue building her experience in finance and investment management through future internships and leadership opportunities. This summer, she will intern at Causeway Capital Management in Los Angeles, where she will gain exposure to operations, client service, and quantitative research through a rotational internship program. Following graduation from UCLA, Lauren plans to pursue a career in finance, particularly in investment management or financial services, and is interested in earning the CFA designation to strengthen her foundation in financial analysis and investments.

Zaccai Ng-Posey is a Bay Area first-generation college student studying Economics at UCLA with minors in Accounting and Global Studies. While pursuing his degree, he has focused on his education and personal growth, making time for leadership events, career opportunities, and professional development. He is a four-time Dean’s Honor List student, a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, competed in the BCG Case Competition, and took part in the UBS Consulting Workshop. His participation in business, entertainment, investment strategy, and student organizations has only enhanced his interests and career plans. Zaccai has practical experience apart from his studies. He interned and held positions at agencies including PwC, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group, Handshake, and UCLA IT Services. Working in these various roles exposed him to and gave him insight into consulting, entertainment operations, artificial intelligence, and technology support, and helped him to establish skills around communication, analysis, and problem-solving. Outside of school and work, he likes to travel, hike, box, photograph, golf, critique films, and volunteer in his community. In the future, he wants to build a career that spans finance, strategy, innovation, and to be a mentor and support to students from underrepresented communities.

Future Plans

Zaccai continues to explore opportunities in consulting, finance, entertainment strategy, and technology-based business operations at UCLA. Extending his work experience at PwC, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group, Handshake, and UCLA IT Services, he would like to gain more internships in investment banking, strategy consulting, or corporate finance. Zaccai would love to see positions that encompass analytics, business strategy, global market development, and where he can use his technical skills in Python, SQL, Tableau, financial modeling, and more. Upon graduation, Zaccai hopes to enter the professional world of investment banking, consulting, or corporate strategy, eventually intending to enter global finance or entertainment business operations. He aims to use his interdisciplinary education in economics, accounting, and global studies to contribute to organizations making data-driven decisions by enhancing performance. He also aims to someday mentor students from underrepresented backgrounds with the intention of supporting education, business development, and career opportunities.

Receiving the Jeffrey W. Baus Scholarship is a tremendous honor and a meaningful investment in my academic, professional, and personal growth at UCLA. Yuanyun Zhang is a junior at UCLA majoring in Business Economics with a minor in Accounting. Originally from Jiangsu, China, Yuanyun has developed an interest in accounting through both his coursework and hands-on experiences outside the classroom. At UCLA, he has participated in Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, where he helped provide free tax preparation services to community members. Through this experience, he gained a better understanding of how accounting knowledge can be useful in everyday life and how it can support individuals who may not otherwise have access to professional assistance.

Outside of academics, Yuanyun enjoys cooking, traveling, and exploring new places. He likes trying new recipes in his free time and visiting natural landmarks whenever he has the opportunity. He also enjoys working with Excel to organize information and better understand financial data. Through his academic studies, service experience, and personal interests, Yuanyun continues to build a well-rounded college experience at UCLA.

Future Plans

This summer, Yuanyun will begin an internship in the finance industry, which he views as a valuable opportunity to apply what he has learned at UCLA to real-world business practices. His coursework in Business Economics and Accounting has sparked his interest in how companies make decisions, measure performance, and manage financial information. Through this internship, he hopes to learn from industry professionals, enhance his analytical and communication skills, and gain a clearer understanding of the type of work environment where he can thrive after graduation.

As he enters his final year at UCLA, Yuanyun plans to continue focusing on his advanced coursework while preparing for the next stage of his professional journey. During his last terms, he intends to fulfill the remaining requirements for CPA eligibility and begin preparing for the CPA exam. In the long term, he hopes to pursue a career in public accounting or a related field of finance where he can continue to develop strong technical skills and sound professional judgment.

Tommy Nguyen is a junior at UCLA majoring in Business Economics with a minor in Accounting. As a first-generation and transfer student, he came to UCLA determined to get involved on campus and make the most of the opportunities available to him. He is passionate about student government, community service, and using his education to create meaningful impact within his communities. Tommy is currently involved with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, where he assists individuals with free tax preparation services, and is a member of Beta Alpha Psi, UCLA’s accounting honor society. He has also served in various finance roles within USAC offices on campus. Outside of UCLA, Tommy has remained connected to his cultural roots through volunteer work with the Au Co Vietnamese Cultural Center.

Future Plans

This summer, Tommy will be an Accounting Intern at BKF Engineers, where he will assist with accounts payable and receivable processes, financial reporting, and other accounting responsibilities. He sees this as a strong foundation as he works toward a long-term career in accounting. In the future, Tommy hopes to gain international exposure through a study abroad or similar experience. He will also have the privilege of serving as a BruinCorps tutor next academic year, teaching language arts to under-resourced K-12 students in the Los Angeles area. After graduation, Tommy plans to obtain his CPA license and steadily advance within the field. His long-term goal is to either become a partner at a firm or eventually start his own practice.

Lisa Wang is a third-year student at UCLA majoring in Business Economics and minoring in Accounting. Born in Shantou, China, she immigrated to the United States with her mother in her early teens. Navigating a new culture and language taught her how to balance cultural identity, academic expectations, and the occasional sting of feeling like an outsider. With the unwavering support of her mother, Lisa learned to adapt and build resilience, turning obstacles into motivation.

At UCLA, Lisa serves as the dance lead, finance chair, and editor for KBM Dance. Through these roles, she manages and raises team funding, develops leadership skills, and creates video content using Adobe Premiere. Most importantly, she found a place that allows her to pursue her passion for dance, which started in middle school, while building a strong sense of community. Professionally, Lisa serves as the marketing consultant at Bear Consulting, where she collaborates with others to develop practical marketing solutions for local businesses. She also works as a student dining employee at UCLA, thriving in fast-paced environments that strengthen her adaptability, communication, and teamwork skills.

Future Plans

After graduation, Lisa plans to acquire her CPA license and pursue a career in public accounting. In the summer of 2026, she will join Ernst & Young in Irvine as an audit intern, where she hopes to gain exposure to behind-the-scenes business operations and the financial processes that drive organizations forward. Combining her passion for data analysis with her “people-person” nature, Lisa likes to build a career that generates value for individuals while fostering genuine relationships in the business world.

I am beyond grateful to receive the Prof. Harry Simons Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship. As an immigrant, I hold myself responsible for my family’s well-being. Watching my mom single-handedly support and raise our family, I try to alleviate her burden by dedicating much of my time to part-time jobs and securing internships. While these experiences have strengthened my resilience and work ethic, they have also limited the time I could dedicate to academics and extracurricular involvement. As I enter my last year at UCLA, there are still many opportunities, passions, and experiences I hope to pursue. Rachel Min is a rising senior from Chino Hills, California, majoring in Business Economics with minors in Accounting and Statistics at UCLA. During her time at UCLA, Rachel has been actively involved with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), assisting members of the Los Angeles community file their taxes. She will also serve as a Training Coordinator for the 2026–2027 school year. Through her involvement with VITA, Rachel developed a strong interest in pursuing a career in tax. Bilingual in English and Korean, Rachel also serves as a Director for the Korean Undergraduate Business Society, where she leads various consulting, accounting, and finance projects each quarter. These experiences have allowed her to further develop her technical and leadership skills while making a meaningful impact within the business community. In her free time, Rachel enjoys exploring new cafes, baking, watching movies, and hanging out with her friends.

Future Plans

Rachel plans to complete her tax internship at BDO the summer of 2026. After graduation, she intends to obtain her CPA license and continue pursuing a career in tax while remaining open to exploring other areas in accounting as new opportunities arise. In the long term, Rachel hopes to continue giving back to the community by promoting financial literacy and mentoring students in better understanding financial wellness.

Kyle Hsu is a junior at UCLA majoring in Business Economics with a planned minor in Accounting. He was born in Long Beach, California, and grew up in a Brazilian, Vietnamese, and Taiwanese household. He transferred to UCLA from Cypress College, where he enrolled after leaving high school two years early, and went on to serve as a Student Ambassador and Business Club President. He currently works as a research assistant on behavioral economics studies at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Across his coursework and research, he has developed skills in financial analysis, econometrics, and applied economic research. In his free time, Kyle enjoys golfing, playing tennis, planning new travels, and trying new foods. His long-term goals include traveling to all seven continents, becoming a scratch golfer, and becoming a mentor to future students.

Future Plans

This summer, Kyle will be joining Western Digital as a Sales & Marketing intern, where he hopes to gain industry-side exposure to a global technology company. Alongside continuing his research at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, he will intern at EY and KPMG over the year ahead. After graduating, Kyle plans to pursue a career in economic consulting, applying the empirical and analytical skills he has developed through his Anderson research and coursework to real-world business and policy questions. Looking further ahead, he hopes to earn an MBA a few years into his career with aspirations to start his own company.

I am very grateful to receive the Venu and Ana Kotamraju Endowed Scholarship, and I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Kotamraju for their generosity. My path to UCLA has not been a typical one. I left high school at fifteen and started at Cypress College before transferring here as an Economics major. This scholarship will help with the financial burden of my education and allow me to focus more fully on coursework, research at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, and other opportunities. Just as importantly, it affirms the path I have chosen and pushes me closer to my goals. I hope to return to Anderson for an MBA a few years after I graduate, and knowing that two alumni who took that same path chose to invest in students like me means a great deal. Future Plans

A junior at UCLA pursuing a degree in Business Economics with a minor in Accounting, Mischa’s studies focus on the structural mechanics of monetary policy and its broader societal implications. She applies financial accounting principles to the analysis of central bank balance sheets to analyze how the Federal Reserve’s policy influences capital allocation towards sustainable infrastructure and general welfare. Outside of her studies, Mischa is on the executive board for Beta Alpha Psi, UCLA’s accounting society, and is a writer for Her Campus, a global platform and digital magazine for college students.

Through her involvement in the on-campus accounting community and rigorous academic coursework, Mischa has acquired an internship at Deloitte, where she will be working with the tax team to organize data sets for corporate clients, as well as researching tax codes and policy shifts. After graduation, she plans to go into Public Accounting, hoping to work on the tax nonprofit team at one of the Big 4 accounting firms. Future Plans

Mischa has several ambitions for her future, the foundation of which will remain her academics and upcoming internships. While she greatly enjoys studying financial statements and tax law in her classes, she is excited to further her accounting journey through her upcoming internships. She will be participating in the Deloitte Discovery Tax Internship program this coming summer and the Ernst & Young 360 Careers Tax Internship the following summer. In addition to these experiences, she will also be completing a Wealth Management internship at Stifel to gain a broader understanding of the financial world.

Mischa hopes that with this experience under her belt, she will be able to enter the workforce with the analytical skills of an accountant and the client-focused mindset of a financial advisor. After completion of her studies at UCLA, Mischa aims to obtain her CPA license and receive a CFP certification. Upon gaining sufficient experience, she plans to pay it forward as an educator, where she hopes to become a mentor similar to the professors she looks up to today.

Scholarship Impact

Since my freshmen year, I have been working part time to support my academic journey, but as my coursework has advanced and increased in rigor, it becomes increasingly difficult to balance my studies, professional growth, and work. Receiving the Gumbiner Savett Inc. Endowed Undergraduate Prize greatly eases this burden, so I can prioritize devoting my time and energy to progressing my career ambitions. In addition to alleviating financial stress, this award is incredibly meaningful to me as it recognizes the effort I’ve put in during my time so far at UCLA. This support will directly aid me in my journey to becoming a CPA and obtaining a CFP certification, and I hope that the work I put in today will ultimately lead me to a position where I can give back to my community in a similar way.

Jerry Marnell was born in Portland, Oregon and moved to the Seattle area before settling in Carmel, California where he graduated from high school in 2023. Jerry has been interested in videography and photography for most of his life, which inspired him to pursue a career in entertainment business and major in economics. He is an avid sports fan as well, rooting for Seattle-based professional teams while also playing basketball and running cross country during high school. He still runs frequently and he finished his first marathon in 2025 with a time of 3:37:45. Jerry loves traveling which was his primary motivation for studying abroad in the Fall of 2025. Two of his dream trips would be backpacking in the Himalayas and hiking the Patagonia mountain range.

Future Plans

Since coming into college, Jerry has always wanted to work in the entertainment business for a media company or film studio. This summer, Jerry will be interning in New York at Comcast working in their advertising technology department. He will be working on their DSP team doing market research and sales development. Post-graduation, Jerry wants to continue working in entertainment either at a media conglomerate like Comcast or at a film studio in Los Angeles or New York City. He eventually wants to go back to school to pursue an MBA or a master’s degree in economics in order to one day work on the strategy side of a large media company.

I am extremely grateful to be a recipient of the Bruce Endowed Scholarship for the 2026-27 academic year. Scholarships have been a huge part of my ability to attend UCLA and experience all the amazing things this school has to offer without having to worry about funding my education quite as much. Angie Sun is a third-year student with majors in Business Economics and Statistics & Data Science, as well as a minor in Accounting. She is passionate about the intersection of data analytics and accounting, seeking to leverage her accounting background with data science in the hopes of discovering new financial insights for individuals and companies alike. She is constantly on the lookout for opportunities to learn and grow, both academically and personally. Angie is an organization ambassador for the UCLA Alumni Scholars Club (ASC), where she introduces prospective UCLA students to ASC’s scholarships and network on a seasonal basis. She has also been involved in UCLA DataRes, where she learned about modern data analytics methods and applied her gained knowledge to a culminating project. In addition, Angie is active in Beta Alpha Psi, where she regularly engages with accounting professionals to broaden her industry network, obtains key financial insights from professor workshops, and enjoys the company of her peers. In her free time, Angie loves to read, watch dramas, and explore the outdoors.

Future Plans

Angie plans to obtain her CPA license after graduation, becoming a Certified Public Accountant. She knows how central having healthy finances can be to an organization and thus hopes to enter the accounting industry as an auditor, where she will apply her data and financial knowledge to the real-world, assisting clients in ensuring fiscal compliance and financial security. She has a steadfast commitment to using the power of accounting in helping individuals achieve financial well-being and stability, later aspiring to become an accounting manager or perhaps opening her own financial consulting firm.

Emily is currently a third year Business Economics student and first year transfer at UCLA with a strong background in student leadership and advocacy work. Her career interests were ultimately rooted in her experience serving as the Associated Students President at Fullerton College, where she worked to implement solutions that strengthened communities and created more equitable support for all students. She spearheaded projects including establishing a campus prayer and meditation room, improving cafeteria offerings to meet diverse dietary needs, and launching a student discount program that built partnerships across the community.

When she transferred to UCLA this past fall, she wanted to continue involving herself in initiatives that would help to support the university’s diverse student population. She was appointed as one of four undergraduate representatives on the Chancellor’s Student Fee Advisory Committee and currently serves as the Director of Finance for the Transfer Student Representative Office. Emily additionally serves as a consultant for UCLA 180 Degrees Consulting, where her most recent client projects have included working with the YMCA of the Greater Tri Valley, the United Nations Foundation, and UCLA Digital & Technology Solutions team.

Outside of school, Emily loves cafe hopping with friends, weightlifting, and watching mockumentary sitcoms. Her top three favorite travel destinations include Kyoto, Thailand, and New York City.

Future Plans

During the summer of 2026, Emily will be interning at Aon as an M&A and Transaction Solutions intern in New York City. Upon graduating next year, she plans to travel abroad before pursuing a career in strategy consulting with a focus on serving higher education and social impact organizations. She wants to be able to help these institutions make thoughtful financial decisions and effectively utilize resources that directly translate into improving how they serve their communities. After gaining industry experience, Emily intends to pursue her MBA at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Ultimately, she aspires to one day launch her own organization dedicated to providing advisory services for transfer students like herself, helping them integrate seamlessly into their new academic environments.

Khanh is a Business Economics student at UCLA with a minor in Global Health. Her interests currently lie at the intersection of business and social impact. Originally from Vietnam, she immigrated to the U.S. in 2019 and quickly developed a passion for understanding international business and the role that business leaders play in supporting families and communities.

She has explored interests ranging from international business initiatives connecting the U.S. and Vietnam to projects involving economic development and education access. She is an active learner who values collaboration, meaningful discussions, and community engagement. Outside of professional activities, she enjoys watching tennis, Korean dramas, and traveling; fun fact, she has been to 32 of 50 U.S. states!

Future Plans

Khanh plans to explore a career in consulting and/or international business throughout her undergraduate career at UCLA. She is particularly interested in gaining experience in management consulting and economic analysis through opportunities with firms that focus on global markets, the public sector, and economic development.

Inspired by her family’s entrepreneurial background and her own immigrant experience, she is interested in creating stronger business connections between Vietnam and the United States. Meicheng Chen is a junior at UCLA studying Business Economics and Political Science. Driven by her passion for the intersection of economics and policy, she has served as a research assistant on a joint project between UCLA’s Anderson School of Management and the Political Science department, and contributed to the UCLA team at the College Fed Challenge. Beyond academics, Meicheng served as a director at USAC student government for two years, led pro bono consulting projects for startups in Los Angeles, and interned at multiple institutions including a commercial bank, a law firm, and a government agency. In her free time, she enjoys trying out new outdoor activities, thrifting, and painting.

Future Plans

Meicheng aims to pursue a career at the intersection of business and law. After graduation, she plans to pursue higher education specializing in corporate law, public interest, and economic strategy. This upcoming summer, she will be interning with an international nonprofit dedicated to uplifting refugees and minority communities. Henry Li is a junior studying Business Economics with a minor in Data Science Engineering. Originally from Toronto, Canada, he has always been passionate about investment management and finance-related ESG initiatives. Henry will be interning at Goldman Sachs Asset Management this summer, and has previously interned with PwC, Scotiabank, and Kingswood U.S. On campus, he serves as the Co-President of the Global Research and Consulting Group, an organization that partners with F500 companies and startups to promote Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. He is also a part of the William F. Sharpe Fellows Program, TAMID Group, and Beta Alpha Psi.

Future Plans

This upcoming summer, Henry will be working as a summer analyst at Goldman Sachs Asset Management in the New York City office. Olivia is currently a third year Business Economics student with a minor in Accounting. She grew up in a small country town in the central coast of California and has loved exploring all Los Angeles has to offer! In her first year at UCLA, Olivia began working as a Law Office Assistant for a nearby law firm that specializes in independent films. This role fostered her interest in pursuing law, and she held the position until the Spring quarter of 2026. Also, during the summer of 2025, Olivia interned at a forensic accounting firm that helped to cement her interest in accounting.

On campus, Olivia has served as a Business Affairs Manager at Cherry Pop Records, UCLA’s student run record label, and she will be soon taking on the role of Finance Director for the organization. This role introduced her to the music side of the entertainment industry and provides an experience unique to UCLA. In her free time, Olivia loves watching UCLA sports, going to concerts, and being outdoors.

Mingxuan(Jane) Tan is a UCLA undergraduate pursuing a double major in Business Economics and Statistics. Born and raised in Shanghai, Jane developed an interest in how economics, data, and strategic decision-making shape businesses and capital allocation. At UCLA, she has pursued coursework that bridges economic analysis, accounting, finance, and quantitative methods, while taking on leadership roles in student organizations and supporting peers interested in business and finance.

Jane has also gained professional experience across investment banking, private equity, venture capital, and real estate investment. These experiences have deepened her interest in applying economic principles to real-world investment decisions and in understanding how thoughtful capital allocation can support long-term business growth. Outside of academics and professional pursuits, Jane enjoys exploring different cuisines, discovering new restaurants, and staying active through badminton and dance.

Future Plans

After graduation, Jane plans to pursue a career in private equity, with a long-term interest in growth equity and private equity secondaries.
