The UCLA Department of Economics and its alumni Board of Visitors created the William Sharpe Fellowship in 2008 as a way to engage UCLA alumni in supporting the career and professional development needs of undergraduate students at UCLA. Named in honor of Nobel Prize-winning UCLA alumnus, the program has been successful in bringing together top employers with our brightest students.
Once selected, each Sharpe Fellow receives targeted mentorship, leadership training, and industry introductions to help them launch a successful career. This includes specific workshops and events that prepare students for summer internship recruiting, while connecting them to both alumni and industry leaders. Currently, the Sharpe Fellows program provides support for Investment Banking, Finance, Consulting, and Technology. Sharpe Fellows have accepted internships at top companies including Goldman Sachs, PwC, J.P. Morgan, EY, Deloitte, KPMG, PIMCO, Credit Suisse, Google, Apple and Intel. Most impressive of all, 100% of Sharpe Fellows have received a summer internship placement.
The Sharpe Fellowship is made possible through the generous support of the Economics Board of Visitors.
Information for Employers
The Sharpe Fellowship identifies UCLA’s brightest and most successful undergraduate students. Our distinguished alumni volunteers interview and select students to be named Sharpe Fellows. The committee looks for students with strong communication skills, leadership experience, high academic achievement, and an overall drive towards success. The leaders on our Board of Visitors are committed to guide and mentor this next generation of leaders from UCLA through this program. Students selected as Sharpe Fellows are typically announced in early fall.
We invite you to join us in this program. The UCLA Alumni Association, the Department of Economics and its Board of Visitors will work with you to find talented UCLA undergraduates with a strong interest in your firm. The Sharpe Fellows program is a great way for you to connect with UCLA students who will contribute to your organization for years to come.
In order to participate, employers must provide a full-time paid internship opportunity for at least 10 weeks during the summer and appoint an immediate supervisor or mentor for the summer intern.
