The paper “Index Funds, Asset Prices and the Welfare of Investors” by UCLA Professor William Zame and coauthor Martin Schmalz (Oxford) was recently featured in Money. It concludes that, as index funds become cheaper and more widely available, the price of stocks will increase reducing their returns and therefore the investors’ welfare.
