Joyce Chen

Joyce Chen – Lipschutz

Biography: Joyce Chen is currently a senior at UCLA with two degrees in Business Economics and Statistics, and a minor in Digital Humanities. She was born and raised in Jiangsu, China, and came to Los Angeles four years ago to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at UCLA. On campus, Joyce served as the President of Ascend at UCLA, a student chapter of Ascend with a mission to foster community and engagement for Pan-Asian students and business professionals. She was also a senior consultant and project manager at 180 Degrees Consulting, where she worked on three pro-bono consulting projects for non-profits and social enterprises. Beyond campus involvements, Joyce has completed internships in various fields, including consumer goods, startups, market research, and consulting through the school year and over the summer. During her free time, Joyce enjoys traveling, baking, hiking, photography, and watching American TV shows.

Future plans: After graduation, Joyce will begin working at Bain & Company as an Associate Consultant at the Shanghai office, broadening her knowledge about business and helping clients solve their business problems and increase their social impact. In the long term, she plans to pursue an MBA after a few years of work experience.

What this scholarship means to me? I am incredibly grateful to receive the Donald Lipschutz Scholarship. I would like to sincerely thank the donor of the scholarship and the department for making this scholarship possible. This scholarship will help me ease my financial burden, serve as a recognition of my past academic and professional achievements, and give me an opportunity to focus on improving my academic performance, building my professional skill sets, and ultimately becoming a well-rounded professional. I will consistently strive to exceed expectations and make positive contributions to the UCLA community.

Adam Chan

Adam Chan – Simons

Biography: Adam Chan is a third-year Business Economics major with a minor in Accounting. He has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in Boy Scouts, culminating in a community service project that saw the donation of a vegetable garden and greenhouse to his local women’s shelter. He has been a member of UCLA Club Swimming for his entire time at UCLA. When not studying for classes or working, Adam enjoys reading books that his friends recommend, going to the gym, baking, and hanging out with his friends.

Future Plans: This year, Adam currently has internships at multiple public accounting firms in the spring and summer in Los Angeles and San Francisco respectively. Next year, he hopes to be accepted to law school in order to pursue a career in corporate law, aided by his background in accounting. Eventually, he hopes to also pursue an MBA during his law career.

What this scholarship means to me? I am thankful and honored to have been chosen for the Professor Harry Simons Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship for the Study of Accounting this academic year. With this scholarship, I hope to be able to concentrate more on my academic success without having to worry about my financial situation. I am extremely grateful for the department and the donors to have considered me for the award and for their continued support in my academic and professional career.

Yohann Byun

Yohann Byun – Baus

Biography: Yohann Byun is a 3rd-year Economics major, Accounting minor student at UCLA. He’s passionate about pursuing a career in accounting/finance as he accrued experience both in banking and accounting through internships at Citi and CliftonLarsonAllen. Through the internship experience, he found interest in tax and financial statement analysis which he seeks to continue his career in. At UCLA, he’s been working as a student staff at the UCLA Anderson School of Management and aided various MBA programs under Strategic Research Program to run smoothly.

Future Plans: In 2023 summer, he will be interning at EY as a tax intern under the Tax-Diversified Staff Group where he will work with different teams/services within the tax practice. He’s interested in transaction tax as he desires to learn more about M&A and how taxes affect such transactions through tax planning, risk management, and analysis. He’s currently on track to obtain the CPA license, and in the long run, he wants to work more with M&A advisory work and explore the buy side of the finance world.

What this scholarship means to me? I am sincerely grateful to be the recipient of the Jeffrey W. Baus ‘59 Scholarship, and this scholarship inspires me to continue pursuing my  Economics degree at UCLA, work harder, and set high academic goals for myself. Moreover, my goal to build a professional career in accounting/finance is more achievable with the financial support provided by this scholarship. I thank Mr. and Mrs. Baus for your generosity with UCLA students and inspiration to pursue our academic and career goals.

Gabriel Rich

Gabriel Rich – Wark

Biography: Gabriel Rich is a fourth-year student at UCLA studying Economics and Political Science with Concentrations in Value Investing and International Relations. Growing up in San Diego, UCLA has always been his dream school since his dad also graduated from here in 1995. Gabriel’s main involvement on campus consists of serving as President of the Undergraduate Business Society, the largest student organization at UCLA. Beyond this, he has served in various leadership positions with Bruin Value Investing, Bruin Ventures, and Sigma Nu Fraternity. Outside of his studies, Gabriel enjoys hiking, going to the beach, trying new foods, and playing soccer.

Future Plans: Gabriel will be working as an Investment Banking Analyst at Credit Suisse in their Financial Sponsors Group in New York City after graduation.

What this scholarship means to me? I am immensely grateful to have received the Robert D. & Margaret A. Wark Scholarship. I would like to thank the Wark family for their sincere generosity and contribution towards my education. This scholarship will positively impact my academic career, as I will be able to focus more on my coursework, extracurriculars, and community service efforts during my final year here at UCLA. In the future, I hope to pay it forward by supporting younger generations of Bruins who follow.

Guido Tabellini, a former PhD student and faculty member at UCLA, receives the 2022 Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Economics, Finance and Management

The 2022 Frontiers of Knowledge Award was awarded to Guido Tabellini, a former PhD student and faculty member of the UCLA economics department, for transforming political economy into a modern, empirical, interdisciplinary science. The award was shared with Timothy Besley and Torsten Persson. The three awardees, together with the late Alberto Alesina, have employed both theoretical and empirical tools to examine “how political institutions and processes shape economic policies and outcomes on one hand, and how economic factors shape political institutions on the other,” contributing decisively to shape the field of modern political economy.

UCLA Hosts the 2023 North American Summer Meeting of the Econometric Society

The 2023 North American Summer Meeting of the Econometric Society will be hosted by the Department of Economics at the University of California, Los Angeles, on June 22-June 25, 2023. More information on the Meeting can be found here.

The Econometric Society is an international society for the advancement of economic theory in its relation to statistics and mathematics. Its main activities are: the publication of the journals Econometrica, Quantitative Economics, and Theoretical Economics; the publication of a research monograph series; the organization of scientific meetings in six regions of the world.

Paper by Oleg Itskhoki Wins the Robert E. Lucas Jr. Prize

The Robert E. Lucas Jr. Prize was awarded to UCLA Professor Oleg Itskhoki and his coauthor Dmitry Mukhin for the paper “Exchange Rate Disconnect in General Equilibrium”, which was published in the Journal of Political Economy.
The Robert E. Lucas Jr. Prize is awarded biannually for the most interesting paper in the area of Dynamic Economics published in the Journal of Political Economy in the preceding two years. The prize was established in 2016 on the occasion of the celebration of Lucas’s seminal contributions to economics and his Phoenix Prize award.
