Edward McLaughlin

2012 The Donald Edward Bragg & Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship Recipient

Biography: Edward McLaughlin is a third-year student majoring in Business Economics. He grew up in Torrance, CA, with his parents and two siblings. In high school, he enjoyed playing baseball and wished to continue his athletic career in college; however, a torn triceps tendon effectively ended his hopes of continuing to play at the highest level. He acknowledged his comparative advantage in academic pursuits and decided to enroll at UCLA, where his increased emphasis on academics has allowed him to excel. He chose to major in Business Economics because of its relevance in the world today and the variety of practical applications for which the degree will provide a useful background. He enjoys reading, going to the beach, and playing sports.

Future Plans: Edward will work in the investment research division of a large investment bank upon graduation in June 2013. From there, he intends to rise within the bank but also has an interest in moving to the buy-side. Edward also has a strong interest in entrepreneurship. While he is currently working on several ventures, he has a special interest in eventually managing his own hedge fund.

What does the scholarship mean to me?: I want to thank the Bragg family for awarding me the Donald Edward Bragg and Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship. Their generosity exemplifies their commitment to undergraduate education in the Economics Department at UCLA. This scholarship will ease my financial burden and allow me to focus on my education and lessen the worry of the rising cost of tuition and extortionist textbook costs. I am proud that the Bragg family can now share in my future success.

Jeremy Reynard

2013 The Donald Edward Bragg & Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship Recipient

Biography: Jeremy Reynard is a fourth-year student originally from the Bay Area. He is currently studying Business Economics and plans to graduate in Winter Quarter 2014. Outside of class, Jeremy’s time at UCLA has been defined by his work with Camp Kesem, where he is the executive director and a camp counselor.

Future Plans: Jeremy will move back north and start his career at LinkedIn as a Global Sales Operations University Associate in September 2014. Later down the line, he may consider applying for business or other grad school.

What does the scholarship mean to me?: I want to extend my deepest appreciation to the Bragg family for awarding me the Donald Edward Bragg and Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship. I am amazed by their generosity and commitment to UCLA, specifically the Department of Economics. The support will allow me to make the most of the last few months at UCLA, alleviating the burden of debt after graduation. Thank you! I hope to someday give back to UCLA like you have.

Po-Jen Shih

2014 The Donald Edward Bragg & Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship Recipient

Biography: Po-Jen (Teddy) Shih is a third-year business-economics major with minors in accounting and French. Proud of his Taiwanese and Canadian upbringing, he loves traveling, learning, and finding opportunities to practice his rusty French. He is actively involved in Alpha Kappa Psi, UCLA Athletics, Taiwanese American Union, and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. If any free time is left, you can find him attending to his collection of eccentric hobbies such as chess, bowling, and Pokemon research.

Future Plans: Po-Jen is attracted to the big-pictured strategic aspect of a business. He received a summer internship offer for Deloitte Advisory in the LA Office early this month. After his junior summer, he plans to graduate two quarters early to prepare for the CPA exam. Longer down the road, he aspires to gain enough experience to create a two-fold impact as a great advisor to his client and a greater mentor to future Bruins.

What does the scholarship mean to me?: I feel humbled and privileged to Donald Edward Bragg & Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship. I would first off like to extend my deepest gratitude to the Bragg family. The scholarship not only allows me to focus on school and extra-curricular work without financial stress but also inspires me to work even harder on a daily basis. Paying international tuition is not easy; the scholarship certainly alleviates the burden. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Zhou Fang

2014 The Donald Edward Bragg & Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship Recipient

Biography: Zhou Fang is a junior student who major in Business Economics and minor in Accounting. Born in China, he went to United States alone for college education at age of 18. With hardworking and his love in Business and Accounting, he did excellently in academics. Also, he is a volunteer in UCLA Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. In 2014, he participated in PwC Challenge Case Competition in UCLA. His team performed exceptionally and stood out to win the Second Place. He also interested in Basketball and Skateboarding.

Future Plans: Zhou Fang plan to devote himself into a business-related career. He plans to seek an internship or a full-time position in fields of Accounting, Consulting, or Investment Banking. He may pursue MBA education after graduating from college. He also desire to start up his own business in the near future. He is currently working as an advisor in a start-up team.

What does the scholarship mean to me?: I sincerely appreciate Bragg Family’s generous Donald Edward Bragg & Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship. It is my great honor to receive this award. This award is a great encouragement for me. The scholarship alleviates the burden of me and my family, and helps me focus on my study and my future career.

Qin Shen

2015 The Donald Edward Bragg & Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship Recipient

Biography: Qin Shen is a senior pursuing a Business Economics major and a Mathematics Minor at UCLA. Born and raised in Shanghai, she came to the United States for a better college education after graduating from high school. She has been actively involved in various student organizations and community services including Global Connection Council, the Chinese Student Association, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), and Bruin Tzu Ching. Qin has also worked as an intern in both the Agricultural Bank of China and Oriental Public Accountants Ltd. During her free time, she enjoys reading, playing the piano and
traveling.

Future Plans: Qin plans to pursue a master degree in economics after she receives her bachelor degree or to find a full-time job in a financial advisory company or accounting firm.

What does the scholarship mean to me?: I feel so honored to be the recipient of the Donald Edward Bragg & Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship for this 2015-2016 school year. This scholarship greatly eases my financial burden and allows me to focus more on my school work. The award also encourages me to dedicate more to my extracurricular activities and inspires me to pursue other higher achievements in the future. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the donor, the Bragg Family, for their kindness and generosity.

Zhenxiong Han

2015 The Donald Edward Bragg & Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship Recipient

Biography: Zhenxiong Han is a senior double majoring in Business Economics and Applied Mathematics, with a Specialization in Computing. Born and raised in China, he enthusiastically explores the world of quantitative finance. During school time, he balances classes and extracurricular activities. Zhenxiong participated in the California Teaching Program and UMSA mentorship Program which enables him to share his experience and knowledge with younger students. In summer 2015, he had an internship at China Investment Securities, through which he gained practical experience on stock analysis. He is conducting independent research on game theory with Professor Meyer-ter-Vehn

Future Plans: Zhenxiong will finish his degree in June 2016 and is currently applying for Master of Financial Engineering programs. He then prefers a position in quantitative analysis for an investment banks or hedge fund. After five to ten years, he would like to start up a financial company to implement his own trading models.

What does the scholarship mean to me?: It is my honor to receive The Donald Edward Bragg & Diane Sims Bragg Scholarship for the 2015-2016 academic year. I am grateful for the recognition of my school work and past achievements. The scholarship reduces the financial burden on my family and me, and, therefore enables me to focus more on pursuing my academic goal. This award also inspires me to further contribute back to the community. I want to express my deepest appreciation for The Bragg Family, for their consideration and generosity.
