First-year fellowships (which usually provide tuition and registration fees, plus a $20,000.00 stipend) are awarded to seven or eight entering students. In addition, each year 50 teaching assistantships and several readerships are awarded among the second-, third-, and fourth-year continuing students. Fellowships in varying amounts are awarded to another dozen students. Advanced students also find research assistantships with faculty members not only in the Economics Department, but also in the Graduate School of Management, the Institute for Industrial Relations, and the School of Public Policy. Because the Department’s budget cannot support all of its students, an attempt is made to provide some funding to most students. However, the primary criterion for deciding level of support is performance in the program, both in coursework and the written qualifying examinations.
